NHL Preview 4-5-21

National Hockey League 4-5-21 Nightly Preview

Philadelphia Flyers v. Boston Bruins

Projected Goalies: Brian Elliot v. Dan Vladar

Philadelphia has dropped 2 in a row and despite scratching Carter Hart last week to get him some more practice time, the young goalie has still struggled. Elliot will come in tonight to replace Hart and will be opposite the rookie Dan Vladar who is making an emergency start after Jaroslav Halak tested positive for Covid-19 today. Tuuka Rask is still out injured for Boston in case you were wondering where he is. The Bruins are coming off a 7-5 win over Pittsburgh on the weekend and they are hoping that game has ignited their offense which has been asleep for most of the year. I am going with Philly tonight as they will break their skid against a third string netminder.

The Bet: Flyers Moneyline, Over 5.5 Total Goals

Prediction: Flyers 4-3 Bruins

Edmonton Oilers v. Montreal Canadiens

Projected Goalies: Mike Smith v. Carey Price

Edmonton last played on Friday where they won 3-2 over their rivals Calgary. The Oilers are second in the North Division and will look to further cement their playoff status tonight. Montreal lost in embarrassing fashion last time out as Ottawa beat them 6-3 in their own barn. The Canadiens are in the midst of a playoff battle with Vancouver and Calgary for the 4th spot in the North Division and they know these games in hand are crucial to create breathing room. Carey Price was dreadful last game and the Oilers are cold after not playing for a few days, I will bank on a slow moving game tonight.

The Bet: Under 6.5 Total Goals

Prediction: Oilers 3-2 Canadiens

Ottawa Senators v. Winnipeg Jets

Projected Goalies: Matt Murray v. Connor Hellebuyck

Ottawa has shockingly won 3 of their past 5 games and will look to continue their solid play tonight in Saskatchewan. Matt Murray may start tonight for the first time in weeks as he is recovered from injury. This is not all that great of a development for Ottawa, however, as Murray has been pretty bad this season. Winnipeg is a class team that is likely not too happy with their recent 2 game losing streak. With Hellebuyck starting on home ice tonight I will roll with the heavy favorites.

The Bet: Jets Puckline

Prediction: Senators 1-4 Jets

Vegas Golden Knights v. St. Louis Blues

Projected Goalies: Robin Lehner v. Ville Husso

Vegas is on a shocking 3 game slide at the moment as they dropped both games in a 2 game set against Minnesota. Vegas has had trouble scoring recently as they only mustered 2 goals, at the most, in each of those 3 defeats. St. Louis has massively underperformed all season and is currently in a way worse 6 game losing skid. The Blues are in serious trouble and could easily miss the playoffs if they don’t right the ship quickly. Tonight they are turning to their backup, Husso, in a puzzingly move considering he has only won 1 of his past 4 starts. Only one team can snap their losing streak tonight and it is going to be Vegas.

The Bet: Vegas Moneyline

Prediction: Vegas 3-2 Blues

Colorado Avalanche v. Minnesota Wild

Projected Goalies: Philip Grubauer v. Cam Talbot

There is no hotter team in the NHL right now than Colorado. The Avalanche have won 4 in a row and 12 of their past 14 games. Each of the two games they played against the Blues this past weekend were close one-goal games but you need to secure wins like that to be considered a top team. Minnesota is coming off back-to-back wins over Vegas after having dropped back-to-back games against San Jose. Top rookie Kirill Kaprisov is heating back up again as he has points in 5 of his last 6. This game could really go either way but both teams have hit the under in each of their past 2 matchups so I am rolling with the trends here tonight.

The Bet: Under 5.5 Total Goals

Prediction: Avalanche 3-1 Wild

Toronto Maple Leafs v. Calgary Flames

Projected Goalies: Jack Campbell v. Jacob Markstrom

These two teams met last night and it was Toronto who walked away with a 4-2 road victory. The Maple Leafs won despite starting Michael Hutchinson who has terrible career numbers. Toronto is starting to separate itself from the rest of the North Division and tonight they can further their lead over Edmonton and Winnipeg. Calgary is in freefall mode at the moment and their season looks to be on life support. The Flames have dropped 3 in a row and 8 of the past 10. Calgary has major problems consistently scoring and they haven’t registered more than 2 goals in a game since March 19th, yikes! If the Flames lose tonight you can go ahead and stick a knife into their season and watch this roster get blown up in the summer.

The Bet: Maple Leafs Moneyline

Prediction: Maple Leafs 3-2 Flames

Arizona Coyotes v. Los Angeles Kings

Projected Goalies: Adin Hill v. Calvin Petersen

The late game tonight is an absolute snoozefest that likely no one will watch as the NCAA National Championship game is on. Arizona is one of the most boring teams to watch as they lack star power and even the players they do put out on the ice can barely score themselves. Los Angeles is in the middle of a rebuild/retool, call it what you like, and their mix of veterans and youth makes for a very poor on ice product. The Coyotes played last night and needed overtime to beat a Ducks team that is considerably worse than LA. Ride the Kings and cash that check as you watch Baylor v. Gonzaga come down to the wire.

The Bet: Kings Moneyline

Prediction: Coyotes 1-2 Kings
