NHL Preview 4-30-21

National Hockey League Nightly Preview 4-30-21

Winnipeg Jets v. Montreal Canadiens

Connor Hellebuyck v. Jake Allen

Both of these teams enter this game coming off a loss Wednesday. The Jets only scored once in a 3-1 defeat to Edmonton, their 5th straight loss. The Canadiens also only recorded 1 goal in a 4-1 loss to the Maple Leafs. Both of these teams are desperate for points as the season winds down to a close, but for different reasons. The Jets would like to move up and catch the Oilers to secure home ice advantage in round 1 of the playoffs while Montreal is still fighting for their playoff lives with Calgary hot on their heels. This game is a toss up, and the odds from Las Vegas reflect that, but there is a disparity in the injury problems between these two squads with Les Habitantes being far more hamstrung. Plus, I think the Jets are just a much better team than the Canadiens.

The Bet: Jets Moneyline

Prediction: Jets 3-2 Canadiens

San Jose Sharks v. Colorado Avalanche

Projected Goalies: Martin Jones v. Philip Grubauer

This game has one of the biggest odds disparities I've seen all season. I expected the Avalanche to be heavy favorites but at -330 they are astronomical favorites. A big reason for this number is the fact that Colorado just today got back the services of their starting goalies, Grubauer, as well as top-line forward Mikko Rantenen, both of whom were on the Covid-19 list. Those reinforcements take the mismatch that is this game to a whole new level. San Jose shook off a long losing streak by rattling off two straight against the Coyotes but tonight they get a far tougher opponent away from home ice as well.

Prediction: Sharks 2-4 Avalanche

Los Angeles Kings v. Anaheim Ducks

Projected Goalies: Cal Petersen v. John Gibson

I just hope these two teams come out of their rebuild soon because if the Battle of LA stays this boring for another few years I don’t think I can take it. This is the third straight game between these two and the first two were split. Both of these teams rank in the bottom 10 of the league in goals scored per game, with the Ducks ranking dead last at a paltry 2.16 GPG. The under has hit in 5 straight games for the Kings and 9 of the last 10 for the Ducks. There is a clear bet here tonight.

The Bet: Under 5.5 Total Goals

Prediction: Kings 3-1 Ducks

Vegas Golden Knights v. Arizona Coyotes

Projected Starters: Robin Lehner v. Adin Hill

Vegas is easily the hottest and best team in the NHL right now. The Golden Knights own the longest win streak in the NHL this season and it is still active tonight at 10 consecutive victories. A big reason for Vegas’ dominance is their impeccable goalie tandem that allows them to throw out a bonafide starting goalie for every single game regardless of circumstance. Tonight that goalie is Robin Lehner who is 12-1-2 on the season allowing barely over 2.00 goals against per game. Arizona enters this game on what I consider its last leg in the playoff race. The Coyotes are 3 games below .500 and dropped 2 straight earlier this week to a bad Sharks team. A loss tonight would set them 5 points back of St. Louis for the 4th spot in the West Division with only 5 games remaining. Arizona will be desperate, no doubt, but not even a desperate Coyotes team will be able to hang with this Vegas squad tonight.

The Bet: Vegas Regulation Moneyline

Prediction: Vegas 4-1 Coyotes
