National Hockey League Nightly Preview 4-13-21

Philadelphia Flyers v. Washington Capitals

Projected Goalies: Brian Elliot v. Ilya Samsonov

The Flyers enter this game in 6th place in the East Division, just 3 games above .500, and having lost their last game to Buffalo. Philadelphia is in dire need of points if they have any chance at the playoffs and their recent play does them no favors. Washington pounded the Bruins on Sunday 8-1. Boston was missing several players but the Capitals took the play to them nonetheless. The fact that Washington was able to put up an 8 spot without The Great 8 scoring himself is certainly impressive. Neither team is all that convincing defensively and if Philly can give up 5 goals to Buffalo lord knows how many this Washington team can put up on them.

The Bet: Over 6.5 Total Goals

Prediction: Flyers 3-4 Capitals

New York Rangers v. New Jersey Devils

Projected Goalies: Igor Shesterkin v. Mackenzie Blackwood

Both of these teams enter this game coming off losses. The Rangers were defeated in overtime on Sunday by the Islanders while the Devils lost 5-2 to the Penguins on Saturday. The Rangers still have an outside shot at the playoffs while the Devils are squarely down in the dumps. New Jersey has had a little problem keeping the puck out of their net recently as they have allowed 3 goals or more in each of their past 5 games. This is uncharacteristic of a Lindy Ruff coached team, especially with a good goalie in net. Tonight, things don’t get any easier for them against a Rangers team that can be deadly on the attack.

The Bet: Over 5.5 Total Goals

Prediction: Rangers 4-2 Devils

Buffalo Sabres v. Boston Bruins

Projected Goalies: Linus Ullmark v. Jeremy Swayman

You already know what I am going to say about Buffalo...Linus Ullmark. Their best player is in the net again tonight fresh off a win against Philly last time out. Buffalo might have just offloaded a few players via the trade deadline, including Taylor Hall to Boston, but they stand a fighting chance tonight. Boston welcomes Hall to the lineup as well as defenseman Mike Reilly who came over from Ottawa. The Bruins will also get back Charlie McAvoy who is healed from his most recent injury. Everything leans Boston's way tonight, so naturally I am rolling with Ullmark and the Sabres.

The Bet: Sabres Moneyline

Prediction: Sabres 3-2 Bruins

Calgary Flames v. Toronto Maple Leafs

Projected Goalies: Jacob Markstrom v. David Rittich

If you didn’t follow the trade deadline you may see that goalie matchup and go, “Huh?” Rittich and Markstrom were the goalies in Calgary just two days ago but now Rittich is in Toronto facing his former team just a day after being traded. The Maple Leafs played last night and lost 4-2 against Montreal, snapping a lengthy winning streak. Toronto is destined to be tired tonight and the Flames have experience shooting on Rittich from practice, I think this game can only go one way.

The Bet: Flames Moneyline

Prediction: Flames 4-2 Maple Leafs

Tampa Bay Lightning v. Nashville Predators

Projected Goalies: Andrei Vasilevskiy v. Juuse Saros

Tampa won this same matchup 3-0 on Saturday. Vasilevskiy earned the 36 save shutout and he is likely to start again tonight. Juuse Saros has been unreal recently as his season long GAA is down to 2.17 and his save percentage is sniffing .930. Tampa is missing Steven Stamkos again and both of these goalies are too good to expect goals tonight.

The Bet: Under 5.5 Total Goals

Prediction: Lighting 3-1 Predators

Florida Panthers v. Dallas Stars

Projected Goalies: Chris Dreidger v. Anton Khudobin

The trade deadline came and went and Dreidger remained with the Panthers so he will start tonight. Florida will be without several of its recent acquisitions including Sam Bennett, Brandon Montour, and Nikita Gusev as well as injured forward Carter Verhaeghe. The story of this game will be the players who won’t play for Florida and that is why it will be Dallas who walks away with the two points.

The Bet: Stars Moneyline

Prediction: Panthers 2-3 Stars
