National Hockey League 4-1-21 Nightly Preview

Washington Capitals v. New York Islanders

Projected Goalies: Ilya Samsonov v. Semyon Varlamov

Washington blew another third period lead on Tuesday as it lost 5-2 after entering the final frame up 2-1. The Capitals have had a problem holding on to leads all season and the issue is starting to officially become a trend. The Islanders have dropped 2 in a row, both at the hands of the Penguins, and will look to get off the schneid tonight. The Islanders game plan pretty well for the Caps considering their bench boss, Barry Trotz, used to coach the Capitals. I will bank on the inside info paying off on (in?) Long Island.

The Bet: Islanders Moneyline

Prediction: Capitals 2-4 Islanders

Columbus Blue Jackets v. Tampa Bay Lightning

Projected Goalies: Elvis Merzlikins v. Andrei Vasilevskiy

Columbus bounced off their losing streak with a win over this same Tampa team on Tuesday. The win was very impressive considering the Blue Jackets went into that game on the heels of back-to-back losses to Detroit. Tampa played its backup goalie on Tuesday in hope of giving Vasy a rest and tonight they will swing back to their normal starter in hopes of snapping a short 3 game losing streak. The Lightning are a far superior team and Tuesdays slip was more indicative of them taking Columbus for granted than anything else.

The Bet: Lightning Puckline

Prediction: Blue Jackets 1-4 Lightning

New York Rangers v. Buffalo Sabres

Projected Goalies: Igor Shesterkin v. Dustin Tokarski

The Rangers rallied two comeback efforts against the Capitals in each of their past two games, with one resulting in a win. New York has a legitimate chance at securing the 4th spot in the East Division if they keep playing as well as they have recently. Buffalo shocked the sporting world with a win last night to snap their horrendous 18 game losing streak. The Sabres owe a lot of that win to goalie Linus Ullmark who only allowed 1 goal to a Flyers team that possess a strong offense. Ullmark is the best player on the Sabres but since tonight is back-to-back, he will have to rest, and the Sabres will return to their losing ways.

The Bet: Rangers Puckline

Prediction: Rangers 5-2 Sabres

Detroit Red Wings v. Florida Panthers

Projected Goalies: Thomas Greiss v. Chris Dreidger

The Red Wings had started to play better hockey recently before losing 4-1 to this Panthers team on Tuesday. Detroit is at the bottom of the Central Division but they still play for pride most nights. The Panthers won their first game without top defenseman Aaron Ekblad and will have to get used to that as he is ruled out for the season with a broken left leg. Chris Dreidger will make what could be his last start for the Panthers as they just signed their prized goalie prospect, Spencer Knight, to an entry level deal. Dreidger has been a fine goalie all year and any contender looking to solidify their backup spot should be calling Florida right now.

The Bet: Under 5.5 Total Goals

Prediction: Red Wings 2-3 Panthers

Pittsburgh Penguins v. Boston Bruins

Projected Goalies: Casey DeSmith v. Dan Vladar

It is a battle of the backups tonight in Boston. Casey DeSmith will get the start for the Penguins who have won 4 in a row and rolled through the month of March. Dan Vladar is between the pipes for the Bruins who needed the shootout to secure a win against their primary rivals this season...the Devils? Boston is a team that has massively underperformed compared to expectations and they find themselves firmly in a playoff hunt at the moment. They have the 4th spot going into tonight's game but they will need 2 points to secure some breathing room

The Bet: Over 5.5 Total Goals

Prediction: Penguins 4-3 Bruins

Montreal Canadiens v. Ottawa Senators

Projected Goalies: Jake Allen v. Filip Gustavsson

Montreal returned from a Covid-19 pause on Tuesday and beat the brakes off Edmonton by a score of 4-0. The shutout for Carey Price was much needed as he has struggled through the first half of the season. He will rest tonight in the first half of a two game stretch with Ottawa. The Senators last played a week ago and lost to the Maple Leafs in overtime. Coming off such a large break and starting an inexperienced goalie like Gustavsson spells trouble for Ottawa.

The Bet: Canadiens Puckline

Prediction: Canadiens 3-1 Senators

Carolina Hurricanes v. Chicago Blackhawks

Projected Goalies: James Reimer v. Kevin Lankinen

This same matchup went down on Tuesday and it resulted in a shocking win for the Blackhawks. Carolina has had a great season and they were humming along headed into that game before dropping it to a Blackhawks team who had a brutal month of March. The over used to be a huge trend whenever the Hurricanes played, but it has only hit in 2 of their last 8 games. With Remier between the pipes, a goalie I absolutely do not trust, I expect the Hurricanes over trend to start back up again.

The Bet: Over 5.5 Total Goals

Prediction: Hurricanes 4-3 Blackhawks

Dallas Stars v. Nashville Predators

Projected Goalies: Anton Khudobin v. Juuse Saros

This game pits one team that is sliding to irrelevancy against one team that is rising to contention. Dallas just looks defeated at the moment. They have lost 3 in a row, have a below .500 record, and look like they will miss the playoffs less than a year removed from making a run to the Cup Final. If I were the Stars I would chalk this year up to covid and injuries and throw out the tape. Nashville was a team that was going to be irrelevant all year until a mid-season charge has them in a race for the 4th spot in the Central Division. The Predators have won 6 games in a row and it is largely due to some great goaltending from both Saros and longtime veteran tendy Pekka Rinne. The Stars being favorites in this game is disrespectful to the run the Predators are on and I'm going to keep hammering them until they let me down, which will probably be at about 10:30 Eastern Standard time tonight.

The Bet: Predators Moneyline

Prediction: Stars 2-3 Predators

Minnesota Wild v. Vegas Golden Knights

Projected Goalies: Cam Talbot v. Robin Lehner

Both these teams played last night but against different opponents so tonight we get the rare back-to-back with a fresh second matchup. The Wild are still headed to the playoffs but recently they have looked like the team people expected them to be and not the team that was setting the West Division on fire in the first half of the season. The Wild dropped each of their past two games to a far inferior Sharks team and will look to snap out of it tonight. Their matchup isn't easy as they travel to Vegas to take on the wagon that is the Golden Knights. In a back-to-back setting whichever team has the better backup goalie will typically win, tonight that is a massive advantage to Vegas.

The Bet: Vegas Moneyline

Prediction: Wild 2-4 Vegas
