New Jersey Devils v. Washington Capitals
The Devils scored an upset over the Bruins last game, shutting them out 1-0. New Jersey is still at the bottom of the standings, however, and will continue to miss captain Nico Hischier due to a sinus fracture. In net tonight for the boys from the Garden State is veteran backup Scott Wedgewood. The Caps tallied a commanding win over the Flyers on Sunday and will look to make it two wins in a row without top line power forward Tom Wilson who is out due to suspension. Alex Ovechkin has a history of big goals against the Devils and is within striking distance of Phil Esposito for #6 all time in NHL goal scoring. Expect the lamp to be lit tonight in DC.
The Bet: Over 5.5 Total Goals
Prediction: Capitals 5-3 Devils
Boston Bruins v. New York Islanders
As mentioned above, the Bruins scored 0 goals in a loss to the Devils on Saturday. Boston is missing several starting defenseman, including Brandon Carlo, who was injured on the suspension worthy hit by Tom Wilson. The Islanders have won 5 in a row, including three straight 5-2 decisions over the hapless Buffalo Sabres. New York is flying right now while Boston trends downward due to injury woes.
The Bet: Islanders Moneyline
Prediction: Bruins 2-4 Islanders
Nashville Predators v. Carolina Hurricanes
Speaking of injury problems, things went from bad to worse for Nashville this weekend as they learned top-6 center Matt Duchene will be out several weeks. The Predators already have a long list of regular starters on IR and have been playing like a deflated team all year. The Hurricanes won on the weekend over the Panthers and have looked like a well balanced team game in and game out this season. Their relentless forecheck and propensity to shoot from anywhere on the ice will give the hamstrung Predators fits all night.
The Bet: Hurricanes Puckline
Prediction: Predators 2-5 Hurricanes
Buffalo Sabres v. Philadelphia Flyers
Is tonight the night? Will the Sabres finally win a game? Likely not. Losers of 7 in, row things could hardly sink lower for Buffalo...and then they learned Jack Eichel will be out tonight. Couple that with their starting goalie being Jonas Johansson, and their dim chances just went out the window. Philly got booed off the ice after losing to Washington last time out so they should have extra motivation to give their fans something to cheer for in their second game back in the stands.
The Bet: Flyers Puckline
Prediction: Sabres 1-4 Flyers
Winnipeg Jets v. Toronto Maple Leafs
The Jets were embarrassed by the Canadiens last game as they lost 7-1. Getting 7 goals past star goalie Connor Hellebuyck is hard to do, and he will take the cage tonight hoping it doesn't happen again. The Maple Leafs lost both games of a two match swing out west against Vancouver, but still sit at the top of the North Division. Both teams are on the bounce looking to get back in the win column and that could lead to a low scoring, tight checking affair.
The Bet: Under 6.5 Total Goals
Prediction: Jets 2-3 Maple Leafs
Florida Panthers v. Columbus Blue Jackets
The Panthers played a tight game against the Hurricanes on Sunday but came away with a defeat in the end. Florida continues to play great hockey but the results have been in-and-out recently. The Blue Jackets have had a tough go recently and last time out were smashed by Dallas 5-0. Head Coach John Tortorella got a vote of confidence from their GM last week which probably gave him the freedom to bag skate the squad in practice yesterday. It is tough to find a winner here, but as is the case with any close game, I will always back the team coming off an embarrassing loss.
The Bet: Blue Jackets Moneyline
Prediction: Panthers 3-4 Blue Jackets
Tampa Bay Lightning v. Detroit Red Wings
Tampa completed a big comeback win over the Blackhawks on Sunday winning 6-3 after trailing 3-0 early in the game. Tampa is a team that can always flip the switch which makes them dangerous in every game against every opponent. Tonight’s opponent is the cellar dweller Red Wings who enter the game in 30th place in the overall NHL standings. Detroit will happily welcome captain and star player Dylan Larkin back in the lineup today, but no one man can stop this Lightning squad from taking 2 points on the road.
The Bet: Lightning Puckline
Prediction: Lightning 5-1 Red Wings
Chicago Blackhawks v. Dallas Stars
Chicago pissed away a 3 goal lead over the reigning champs last time out and will surely be looking to atone for that costly mistake. Regular backup goalie, Malcolm Subban, will start tonight in place of star rookie goalie Kevin Lankinen. The Dallas Stars are kind of a mystery team since they were preseason favorites to be a playoff team and are coming off a trip to the Stanley Cup Finals last season. This year however, they have started slow, mostly due to Covid-19 issues jumbling up their schedule. Dallas has played only 20 games, the fewest in the league, and knows that the games they have in hand need to be won if they have any chance of climbing back up the standings.
The Bet: Stars Moneyline, Over 5.5 Total Goals
Prediction: Blackhawks 3-4 Stars
