NHL Preview 3-31-21

National Hockey League 3-31-21 Nightly Preview

Philadelphia Flyers v. Buffalo Sabres

Projected Goalies: Brian Elliot v. Linus Ullmark

The Sabres were so, so close to breaking their massive losing streak in their loss to Philly on Monday. Buffalo had a 3-0 lead going into the 3rd period before blowing it and losing in overtime. Honestly, Philly needed that win more than Buffalo seeing as they are treading water at the moment to avoid drowning in the East Division playoff race. Buffalo will turn back to Linus Ullmark, easily their best goalie, in hopes of snapping the ridiculously long 18 game losing streak tonight. I said in my preview on Monday that I believe the Sabres were going to snap the streak against Philly, they came close that day and tonight I hope they get the job done.

The Bet: Sabres Moneyline, Over 5.5 Total Goals

Prediction: Flyers 3-4 Sabres

Toronto Maple Leafs v. Winnipeg Jets

Projected Goalies: Jack Campbell v. Connor Hellebuyck

Toronto lost a close one to Edmonton on Monday night by a score of 3-2. The Maple Leafs have gone to overtime in 3 straight games and are 2-1 overall in those contests. The Maple Leafs are a good team, no doubt, but all month their play has been sloppy and inconsistent. Winnipeg has used the Leafs mini-lull to catch up to them in the North Division standings as now only 1 point separates these two teams. Both these starting goalies have been hot recently and in a game where I see no clear winner, I will bank on the guys in net to continue their strong play.

The Bet: Under 6.5 Total Goals

Prediction: Maple Leafs 3-2 Jets

Arizona Coyotes v. Colorado Avalanche

Projected Goalies: Adin Hill v. Philip Grubauer

Arizona is playing some strong hockey right now as they have won 3 in a row. Typically the Coyotes have trouble scoring but in each of those 3 wins they have scored 4 or more goals. Colorado has had as good a month of March as anyone as they have compiled an 11-2-3 record. The Avalanche are fueled by their elite top line which combined for 3 of their 5 goals in their last game. Adin Hill has filled in nicely in net for Arizona but his numbers have largely come against softer competition. Tonight he will be in for a wakeup call courtesy of Nathan Mackinnon and company.

The Bet: Avalanche Puckline

Prediction: Coyotes 2-4 Avalanche

Los Angeles Kings v. Vegas Golden Knights

Projected Goalies: Cal Petersen v. Marc-Andre Fleury

These two faced off on Monday night and it was Vegas who convincingly won 4-1. The shot totals for both teams were low and the third period was played at such a fast pace it only took 26 real minutes to get through 20 minutes of game time. Vegas has the ability to roll out any goalie and still have a great chance to win. Robin Lehner only allowed 1 goal on Monday and Marc-Andre Fleury could do the same tonight. Oh, and by the way, Alex Pietrangelo is back tonight for Vegas.

The Bet: Vegas Puckline

Prediction: Kings 1-4 Vegas

Minnesota Wild v. San Jose Sharks

Projected Goalies: Kaapo Kahkonen v. Martin Jones

Another rematch tonight on the slate as both these teams played on Monday. Erik Karlsson’s shoutout clap bomb ended up being the decider in a Sharks win. I gave out the over in that matchup, and it hit, mainly due to my lack of faith in goalies Cam Talbot and Martin Jones. Tonight, with Kahkonen in the net, I have a lot more faith in the Wild than I did previously.

The Bet: Wild Puckline

Prediction: Wild 5-2 Sharks

Calgary Flames v. Vancouver Canucks

Projected Goalies: Jacob Markstrom v. Thatcher Demko

Calgary got crushed by Winnipeg on Monday by a final score of 5-1. The Flames are on the verge of just giving up on this season as it seems the move to bring in Daryl Suter as head coach just wasn't a smart decision. The players look out to lunch and it is very rare that the old school, in your face coaching style works in today’s NHL with players who are just too talented and paid too much to be yelled at constantly by some old dude. Vancouver on a normal night would be my pick to win this game but their injury problems concern me. Elias Peterson is still out, as well as Jay Beagle, Tanner Pearson, and Adam Gaudette, who was just placed on the Covid-19 list. Between a team with the energy levels similar to those of a funeral and another team who has two starting centers out and hasn’t played in nearly a week, the under looks like the right play.

The Bet: Under 6.5 Total Goals

Prediction: Flames 2-3 Canucks
