NHL Preview 3-23-21

National Hockey League 3-23-21 Nightly Preview

New Jersey Devils v. Philadelphia Flyers

The Devils have won 3 of their past 4 games and will roll into Philadelphia tonight in hopes of extending this solid run. The Devils have mostly been getting it done by being solid in their own end, where they have only allowed 2 goals or less in each of those 3 wins. The Flyers are going to be playing the second half of a back-to-back tonight after a 2-1 OT loss to the Islanders yesterday. Philadelphia is really in a bad spot as they have lost 5 of their past 7, and even when they do play good defense like last night, they still find a way to avoid victory. Carter Hart was scratched last night in an effort to give him more practice time and he will start in net tonight opposite the Devils #1, Mackenzie Blackwood. Typically I would take the over in a Flyers game, but with the total being so high, and the Devils playing good defense recently, I will go with a low scoring affair in the City of Brotherly Love tonight.

The Bet: Under 6.5 Total Goals

Prediction: Devils 3-2 Flyers

Florida Panthers v. Chicago Blackhawks

Florida had won 4 of its past 5 before losing to division leaders Tampa on Sunday, 5-3. The Panthers look to be squarely in a playoff spot in the Central Division and a big reason for that is the phenomenal play of top-line center Aleksander Barkov, who has multi-point games in 3 of his last 5 outings. Chicago is in a little bit of a tailspin after such a promising start to the season for a team with little outside expectations going into the year. The Blackhawks have lost 4 straight games and are starting to slip closer to the NHL Draft Lottery rather than the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Tonight's goalie matchup will be the underrated Chris Dreidger for Florida versus the surprising rookie Kevin Lankinen for Chicago. The Blackhawks have allowed 4 or more goals in 4 straight games and tonight I expect more of the same.

The Bet: Panthers Puckline

Panthers 4-2 Blackhawks

Detroit Red Wings v. Nashville Predators

Detroit has won 3 of its past 5, which is a good run for a team that sits at the bottom of their division. The Red Wings know that draft picks are more important to their franchise than wins at the moment, but it is always good for a young team to play hard even when it doesn't matter. Nashville has had a really bad, injury riddled season so far, but recently they have picked up their play, winning 3 of their last 4. Typically teams are massive favorites against Detroit, but Nashville’s poor record has them only favored by an average margin for an NHL game, I’m riding the Predators.

The Bet: Predators Moneyline

Prediction: Red Wings 1-3 Predators

Tampa Bay Lightning v. Dallas Stars

Tampa is hot right now, with wins in 4 straight games. The Central Division leaders, and reigning Stanley Cup Champions, are undoubtedly the best team in the league. The craziest part of their success this season is that they are doing all of this without arguably their best player, Nikita Kucherov. Dallas has underwhelmed since their run to the Stanley Cup Finals last year, where they ironically lost to Tampa. The Stars have had injury problems on both ends of the ice but their play has just been inconsistent all year. With Tyler Seguin out they needed their other top players to step up, but guys like Jamie Benn, who has 5 goals all season, just haven't been there. Dallas will be in desperation mode tonight but not even that will help them against the Lightning.

The Bet: See My Parlay

Prediction: Lightning 4-1 Stars

Colorado Avalanche v. Arizona Coyotes

The Avalanche continued their unbelievably hot play with a 5-1 spanking of Arizona last night. Colorado has won 7 in a row and now fully healthy, this team looks scary. Tonight they will start recent acquisition, Jonas Johansson, in net after the trade with Buffalo last week. Arizona had just recently kicked the can on a losing streak before drawing this back-to-back against Colorado. The Coyotes will turn to typical 3rd string goalie Adin Hill in net, since Darcy Keumper remains out, and Antti Raanta started last night. With the way the Avalanche offense is playing right now, and the unreliability in net for them tonight, this game should be high scoring.

The Bet: Over 5.5 Total Goals

Prediction: Avalanche 5-3 Coyotes
