NHL Preview 3-17-21

National Hockey League 3-16-21 Nightly Preview

Vancouver Canucks v. Ottawa Senators

The Canucks have won 5 of their past 6 games and get a great chance at extending this good run against last-place Ottawa. Thatcher Demko has solidified himself as the starting goalie for Vancouver and he will once again get the nod tonight. The goalie carousel in Ottawa keeps spinning as rookie Joey Daccord will start two straight games for the first time this season. Regular starter Matt Murray picked up a recent injury, regular backup Marcus Hogberg has been out for a while now, and they just claimed Anton Forsberg on waivers from Winnipeg. These two teams met on Monday and Vancouver needed OT to seal the deal, tonight they will get it done in regulation.

The Bet: Canucks Moneyline, Canucks Puckline

Prediction: Canucks 4-1 Senators

Philadelphia Flyers v. New York Rangers

The Flyers also needed OT to seal the deal against New York on Monday. Tonight these two meet again on national TV hoping for more fireworks. The Flyers continue to play turnstile defense as each of their past 4 games the over has hit and the winning team has scored 5 goals, Philly is 2-2 in that stretch. Carter Hart tried to change his fortunes last game but still allowed 4 goals which means head coach Alain Vigneault will turn to backup Brian Elliot tonight. The Rangers are currently hurting from Covid-19 Protocol List issues as top scorer Pavel Buchnevich and top defenseman Adam Fox will remain out tonight. Alexander Georgiev gets the start for the Blueshirts tonight looking to rebound from being pulled in back to back appearances.

The Bet: Flyers Moneyline

Prediction: Flyers 4-3 Rangers

Montreal Canadiens v. Winnipeg Jets

Montreal defeated Winnipeg on Monday to make it 3 straight head-to-head against the Jets. The Canadiens responded well to the upsetting news of the loss of Ben Chariot for what seems to be the remainder of the season. Winnipeg as a whole has been great this month as their strong play has them firmly in second place in the all-canadian North Division. Tonight will feature an elite goalie matchup between Carey Price and Conor Hellebuyck and I expect that to be reflected on the final scoresheet.

The Bet: Jets Moneyline, Under 5.5 Total Goals

Prediction: Canadiens 2-3 Jets

San Jose Sharks v. Vegas Golden Knights

San Jose fought hard to keep the puck out of their net on Monday against Vegas but failed to generate goals in a 2-1 defeat. The play of goalie Devan Dubnyk has really helped the Sharks stay competitive since early in the season they gave up a lot of goals when Martin Jones played in net. Vegas continues to hum along and prove to the world their status as a top tier NHL team. Mark Stone is on an 8 game point streak and goalie Marc-Andre Fleury has been impossible to beat all year. San Jose is 0-3-1 against Vegas this year but I see that trend ending tonight as Fleury’s fatigue from playing every game for so long now catches up to him.

The Bet: Sharks Moneyline

Prediction: Sharks 4-2 Vegas

St. Louis Blues v. Los Angeles Kings

Another night and another matchup between two teams on losing streaks. The Blues are shockingly on a 4 game skid and are getting close to desperation time. Both these teams have had a few days off due to a postponed game on Monday which leads me to believe the veteran group in St. Louis, led by fiery coach Craig Berube, has had time to reset. LA remains a threat to any team they play but their quality is top heavy meaning their depth is stretched thin. Cal Peterson has given them a better chance to win than Jonathon Quick this season and he will start again tonight. Something has to give between these two and I’ll put my money on Ryan O’Reilly and company.

The Bet: Blues Moneyline

Prediction: Blues 3-1 Kings

Edmonton Oilers v. Calgary Flames

The Battle of Alberta continues tonight as the Flames won the last installment on Monday, 4-3. The coaching change in Calgary has clearly motivated the team as they have won each of the first 3 games that Daryl Sutter has been behind the bench for. They would likely be a little disappointed in their attempts to contain Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl last game, but to be fair no team has done a good job in that category recently seeing as both are on multi-game point streaks and are also 1-2 in overa;l league scoring. In a game that could come down to the fine margins I see the goalie battle being the most important as Mike Smith will face off against Jacob Markstrom, someone I consider to be massively underrated by most fans and pundits.

The Bet: Under 6.5 Total Goals

Prediction: Oilers 2-3 Flames

Daily Fantasy Plays of the Day:

Center: Bo Horvat-With Elias Petterson out, Horvat slots in as the top center and power play quarterback for Vancouver. The top tier matchup against Ottawa helps too.

Wing: Elias Lindholm-Lindholm has great career numbers against Edmonton, plays as a top-6 winger with top-unit power play time, and gets to shoot on an old Mike Smith who is far past his prime.

Defence: K’Andre Miller-The rookie defenseman has been great for New York this season and the lack of Adam Fox tonight will offer more minutes to this promising defenseman, especially on the power play.

Goalie: Thatcher Demko-Play the goalie starting against Ottawa, you will win more than you will lose, guaranteed.

Utility: Jordan Kyrou-Another talented rookie to end the column, Kyrou has impressed many in his first pro season. Going up against a veteran LA team means his speed will pose problems for the Kings defense.
